LennieCatesLennie J. Cates, 82, of Owensboro passed away on July 3, 2014, at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital. He was born Jan. 11, 1932, in Madisonville, Ky., to the late Lennie and Mae Cunningham Cates.

He was retired from the City of Owensboro as an operator in the street department and was a member of Precious Blood Catholic Church. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and enjoyed flea markets.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy Cave and a granddaughter, Kaitlyn Ferguson.

Surviving are his daughters, Kathy (Bravil) Hall of Beaver Dam, Debra (Herbert) Short of Pattison, Miss., and Brenda (Bob) Melville of Dubuque, Iowa; eight grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Pauline Cunningham of Madisonville and Dorothy Hickey of Marion, Ky.; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Haley-McGinnis & Owensboro Funeral Home. Visitation at Haley-McGinnis & Owensboro Funeral Home from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday and from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Burial will be in New Southerland Baptist Church Cemetery in Earlington, Ky. Honorary pallbearers will be, Aaron, Terrence, Sam, Joseph, Donnie, Robert and Robert M. The family requests that expression of sympathy take the form of donations to Owensboro Food Banks. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
