Betty Joan Dickens, 78, of Evansville, Ind., formerly of Owensboro, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 25, 2014, at Charlier Hospice Center in Evansville. She was born on Dec. 17, 1935, in McLean County to the late Conrad and Iva Keith Towery.

Betty had worked as a cook for the Days Inn and enjoyed reading and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Ray Dickens on Sept. 18, 1994; a daughter, Shirley Lynn Shelton, on Dec. 28, 2007; a granddaughter, Sesha Dickens, on March 2, 2008, and a brother, Randall Towery in January of 1990.

Surviving are a daughter, Susan Gay Lane, of Evansville; three sons, Carroll Ray (Brenda) Dickens, of Springfield, Tenn., Terry Wade Dickens, of Springfield, and Tracy Matthew (Judith) Dickens, of Hartford; a stepdaughter, Jennifer Kay Ligon, of Warrensburg, N.Y.; 12 grandchildren, David and Kevin Shelton, Breanna Lane, Christina Driscoll, Nicole Boyle, Joshua, Megan, and Meredith Dickens, Skye Taylor, Jessica Fulkerson-Skaggs, and Matthew and Zachary Dickens; 17 great-grandchildren; a brother, William R. Towery, of Owensboro; and four sisters, Dorothy Leishman and Kathy L. Embry, both of Maceo, Brenda J. Gordon, of Calhoun, and Rosalee Estes, of Evansville.

Services will be 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, at Glenn Funeral Home and Crematory with burial following in Brushy Fork Cemetery in Daviess County. Visitation will begin at noon Sunday at the funeral home.
