EdwinFunk1Edwin J. “Doc” Funk, 92, of Owensboro, Ky., died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2015, at Owensboro Health Regional Hospital. He was born June 13, 1922, in Warren County, Ky., to the late Elvis C. and Inez Funk.

Doc retired after 34 years with Texas Gas Corporation where he was a pilot for 12 years and was director of transportation and purchasing. He was also a licensed funeral director and embalmer employed by James H. Davis Funeral Home. He was a veteran of the Air Force, serving as a pilot during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Buena Vista Baptist Church, and the Lions Club and a 50-year member of Masonic Lodge #109. He was a leader for Junior Achievement. Doc and his wife, Betty, lead devotionals at Fern Terrace Nursing Home for over 25 years.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Henry G. Wilkins.

EdwinFunk2Survivors include his wife of 71 years, Betty Ann Funk; sons, Edwin J. Funk, Jr. (Katherine) of Corning, N.Y., and Jared K. Funk of Owensboro; a daughter, Vicki Funk Nix (Jim) of Washington, D.C.; five grandchildren; a great-grandson; a brother, Bill Wilkins of Owensboro; and a sister-in-law, Mary Wilkins of Ohio County, Ky.

Services are 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 31, at the Chapel of James H. Davis Funeral Home & Crematory in Owensboro. Private burial with military honors is in Clear Run Baptist Church Cemetery in Ohio County, Kentucky. Visitation is from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Friday and after 11 a.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.
